Sentence Handed Down in Tragic Case
A man in British Columbia has been sentenced to less than seven years in prison after admitting to manslaughter in the death of his wife.
The ruling, delivered in B.C. Supreme Court, follows a 2023 shooting that shocked a small northern community. The court ultimately concluded the act was not intentional but stemmed from extreme intoxication and reckless behaviour.
What Happened That Night
The incident took place in the remote community of Kwadacha. According to the court, the accused had been drinking heavily for nearly 17 hours before the shooting.
At some point, he fired a rifle from inside his home toward a vehicle parked outside. His wife, who was sitting in the passenger seat, was struck in the head and died.
The court heard there was no clear evidence that he knew she was in the vehicle at the time. In fact, testimony suggested she may have been asleep or unconscious.
No Evidence of Intent, Judge Says
Justice Sandra Sukstorf found no signs of planning or deliberate targeting. Instead, the decision emphasized that the shooting resulted from “profoundly reckless conduct.”
Witnesses described the couple’s behaviour earlier in the day as calm and affectionate. Therefore, the court rejected the idea that the killing followed an argument or ongoing dispute.
Even after the fatal shot, the man fired additional rounds in different directions. However, the judge noted that his actions appeared disorganized and consistent with severe intoxication.
Crown and Defence Disagree on Sentence
Prosecutors pushed for a 16-year sentence, arguing the case involved serious violence and the use of a firearm. They also pointed to concerns about intimate partner violence.
Meanwhile, the defence argued for a much shorter term. They highlighted the man’s lack of a criminal record, his sobriety since arrest, and his personal background.
In the end, the court settled on a sentence of six years and nine months. After credit for time served, the remaining time is just under two years.

Victim impact statements revealed deep grief within the tight-knit community. The victim, a mother of two young children, left behind a loss that the court acknowledged cannot be repaired.
