Scuba Diver Dies at Whytecliff Park in West Vancouver

A tragic diving incident unfolded Saturday afternoon at one of British Columbia’s most popular scuba diving spots.

West Vancouver police say a 50 year old man died after getting into distress while scuba diving near Whytecliff Park. Emergency crews rushed to the area shortly before 1:30 p.m., but the diver was later pronounced dead at the scene.

Multiple Emergency Crews Responded

According to the West Vancouver Police Department, several agencies responded after reports of a diver struggling in the water near the park.

West Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services, B.C. Emergency Health Services, and the Canadian Coast Guard all joined the emergency response effort.

Despite attempts to help the diver, officials confirmed he could not be saved.

Police say the victim’s family has already been notified.

Police Say Death Is Not Suspicious

Investigators say there are currently no suspicious circumstances connected to the death.

The incident now falls under the jurisdiction of the BC Coroners Service, which will work to determine the exact cause of death.

Officials are also encouraging anyone emotionally affected by the incident to contact Victim Services for support.

Whytecliff Park Is a Popular Dive Location

Whytecliff Park in West Vancouver is considered one of the best known shore diving sites in British Columbia.

The area attracts both beginner and experienced divers because of its marine life, underwater visibility, and easy shoreline access. It is also commonly used for scuba training sessions.

The park sits near Horseshoe Bay and is recognized as Canada’s first marine protected area.

Second Diving Death Reported in B.C. This Week

The tragedy comes only days after another scuba diver died near Gabriola Island off Vancouver Island.

In that earlier case, a 66 year old man was found unresponsive in the water after reportedly entering the ocean alone while wearing scuba gear.

Both incidents remain under investigation by the BC Coroners Service.
